It was around the age of 10 when history became really interesting and a passion for me. - Keli
Making History Real to the younger generation.
Do you remember when history first became real to you as a kid? When you realized that history was more than just stories, but real events that happened in the past. For me it really hit me when I was about 10. Now I understood history before that and liked to read about it, but doing my own research and being able to go to the place I read about was life changing.
I truly believe that the best way to teach young people about history is bringing them to the place where it happened. There is a difference between reading about and seeing history with your own eyes. This is just one of the many reasons that pushes me to become a historian and preserve the past.
Taking kids on field trips to museums and historical sites reinforces their memory without them even realizing it. Kids are usually most grateful to be out of the classroom, so why not expand upon that and take them somewhere that makes learning fun. Going to historical sites like the Betsy Ross House, Colonial Williamsburg, Gettysburg battle field brings the past into the present, and gives us access to knowledge unlike any textbook.
